A baluster is a vertical post (sometimes called a spindle or picket) that is installed under the handrail to support it and helps form the guardrail system along the stairs and landings.  They are normally spaced evenly between the newel posts and they are a must for safety.

Wood Balusters

There are many styles of wood balusters, turned, square, or tapered.  Turned balusters are used more in a traditional or colonial design style and the square without turnings are normally used in craftsman or farmhouse style staircases.  Please check you city building departments for proper code compliance for correct spacing between balusters.
